New Grant: Women, Saving, and Investment

The Social Security Administration awarded a joint grant to the Department of Employee Trust Funds and the University of Wisconsin-Madison Center for Financial Security. The grant is funding a study of working women's patterns of saving and investment choices, specifically evaluating how best to encourage women to increase their retirement savings.

The project includes data analyses, a literature review, focus group sessions and a survey. Initial results will be available in October 2011.

This women's service club, established in 1923, "provides direct service and funding for community organizations" (http://www.madisoncommunityfoundation.org).

"Grants from the Altrusa Fund are made in the area of literacy and education broadly defined including:

• Projects to help children and youth meet their full educational potential.
• Projects designed to expand opportunities for people returning to school or the workforce or for retraining.
• Projects for people who need assistance to succeed in school so that they are able to be self-supporting.
• Projects that foster parental involvement with their children’s schooling.

Projects that focus on lifelong learning. The Altrusa Fund will consider grant requests from $1,000 to $10,000. The average grant is $1,200."

Grant of the Week: Open Meadows Foundation

This grantmaker funds, "projects that are led by and benefit women and girls" and that "do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, age or ability."

Specifically they're interested in funding projects which:
" * Are designed and implemented by women and girls;
* Reflect the diversity of the community served by the project in both its leadership and organization;
* Promote building community power;
* Promote racial, social, economic and environmental justice;
* Have limited financial access or have encountered obstacles in their search for funding."


Grants do not exceed $2,000.
Organizational budget should not exceed $150,000.

Grant of the Week: Talbots Women's Scholarship

Talbots will be awarding 50 $1,000 scholarships and 5 $10,000 scholarships to women currently seeking undergraduate degrees who earned their high school diploma or GED at least 10 years ago. Scholarship awards are based primarily on financial need and previous achievements.

The postmark deadline for applications is January 2, 2008, or until the first 1,000 eligible applications have been received, whichever is earlier.

Grant of the Week: AAUW Engineering Dissertation Fellowships

The American Association of University Women is currently accepting applications for their Engineering Dissertation Awards program for the 2008-2009 academic year.

Selected Professions Fellowships are awarded to women who intend to pursue a full-time course of study at accredited institutions during the fellowship year in one of the designated degree programs where women's participation traditionally has been low - in this case, Engineering. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

Applications are due Dec. 15, 2007. Award amount: $20,000.
