session will share details of how UW faculty and students worked with principals of Orion Family Services on
evaluating their “Parent Skill Builders” program. Participants will hear about how this collaborative
community/academic partnership worked and details of the value derived from it. This session will also
explore how similar evaluation projects can impact future funding and program decisions.

Student AFP Chapter Calling for Proposals from Dane County Nonprofits

The Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) at UW-Madison is a collegiate chapter of the international AFP organization. The chapter's mission is to work with local non-profit organizations to help them maximize their effectiveness and to expose current students to meaningful work.

The collegiate chapter of AFP is interested in Dane County WI based projects in which its student members can assist with and learn about a variety of
topics related to non-profits. Projects related to the development of fundraising events and/or awareness campaigns or events are strongly preferred. Event planning allows the members the greatest exposure to the diversity of work involved in fundraising, from marketing and outreach to donor and sponsorship requests. Projects serve not only as a way for the chapter to assist an organization in the community, but also as a learning experience for students. Students in the chapter are not fundraising professionals, but students interested in the non-profit world with varying levels of skills and expertise.

Currently, students are looking for opportunities to assist in a project beginning during the Fall 2011 semester and continuing through the Spring semester. Projects will ideally end between March and April, but please keep in mind that UW Madison students have spring break March 31st- April 8th. If you have interest in having students work on fundraising opportunities on behalf of your organization, please review
guidelines, complete the form, and email it to afp.wisc@gmail.com by August 19, 2011.

Project guidelines:

1. Application deadline is Friday, August 19, 2011.

2. Applicants will be notified by Friday, September 9, 2011 for apotential interview.

3. Applications will be judged based on three criteria: learning opportunities for students, clarity of proposal (including description of tasks in project application), and feasibility.

4. Applicants must be willing to hold regular meetings with the student chapter. These meetings can occur either on or off campus, depending on the
needs of the organization.

5. If selected, applicants must be able to present an overview of their organization and project outline at our October chapter meeting (exact date TBD in consultation with selected organization).

New Grant: Women, Saving, and Investment

The Social Security Administration awarded a joint grant to the Department of Employee Trust Funds and the University of Wisconsin-Madison Center for Financial Security. The grant is funding a study of working women's patterns of saving and investment choices, specifically evaluating how best to encourage women to increase their retirement savings.

The project includes data analyses, a literature review, focus group sessions and a survey. Initial results will be available in October 2011.

My New Favorite Grants Book!

Grant Writing 101: Everything You Need to Start Raising Funds Today by Victoria M. Johnson really is my new favorite book on grants and fundraising in the broadest sense.

It's not unusual for me to be asked to review books on grantseeking or other issues related to nonprofits - either by authors themselves or by their publishers - but what is unusual is for me to be totally head over heels for one of these works. I even plan on giving this book as a gift to friends and colleagues in need!

And here's why:

Johnson's guide is an on-point, need-to-know arsenal for those seeking funding. No time is wasted in obtuse theory or historical ramblings; this book is aimed at those eager to jump right in and grab their fundraising reins.

The author rightly insists that one must know one's organization, its program(s), and the purpose of the funding sought before researching potential funding partners or putting pen to paper to write a grant proposal. Why? Because if you don't know what you're looking for, how can you find it?

Johnson translates the multitude of "types of support" variously referred to in grantmaker literature into seven purpose-driven categories--to which novices and gurus alike can relate. Types of grantmakers are similarly organized into nine flavors, briefly defined, that serve to quickly orient one to the world of funding sources.

With this basic groundwork in place, Johnson then turns to the different questions one must answer with each of the various parts of a proposal. In-text examples of do's, don'ts, sample wording, and even budget layouts are blocked and highlighted to catch the reader's attention at the point of need during the reading and writing process.

But, no, she doesn't stop there, the author graciously and wisely prompts the reader not to stop once a proposal has been submitted, but instead use the opportunity to prepare for one's future fundraising needs. For instance: How might a grantseeker appropriately communicate with potential funders before and after submitting a grant? What does a grant matrix look like and why do you need one? What does an extremely short grant application look like--or an incredibly thorough one? Different grantmakers will be looking for different formats. Johnson helpfully closes her book with a variety of sample proposals and a resource list for further learning.

I never thought I'd say this, but if I could only recommend one grant book and one only--this would be it. For now J

Effective Grants Research: A Success Story

As the Grants Librarian at UW-Madison's Foundation Center Cooperating Collection, I am often asked, "Do know how many of the people/nonprofits that attend your workshops or use your research collection end up getting grants?" Answer to which is, unfortunately, "Nope." Most grantseekers easily (and not unsurprisingly) quickly forget their friendly librarian when faced with the excitement and inevitable work that follows getting a grant or award! Usually, if I do hear of any outcomes, I find out of such success stories incidentally or informally at a much later time. And that's OK! I'm always glad to hear these stories when - and however - they arrive.

Here's one example I'd like to share with you. Wouldn't you like to be able to say something similar?? Then I hope to see at an up-coming workshop or appointment soon...

"I attended your "Introduction to Foundation Grants" and "Foundation Directory Online" trainings several years ago and began using the Grants Information Collection regularly since then.

Forward Community Investments: Loans to Nonprofits

BASIC LOAN GUIDELINES
Investment Forward Community Investments (“FCI”), a Wisconsin-based community loan fund, builds capacity in statewide nonprofits through low-cost loans and expert advisory services. FCI works directly with organizations that serve economically-challenged individuals and households where affordable housing, community services and facilities, along with community stabilization, is the strategy used to promote long-term economic self-sufficiency. Many of FCI’s loans are made in partnership with banks and credit unions. Because of our flexibility, FCI can assume more risk, either by making a loan that could not be made by a conventional lender or by taking a subordinate position to conventional financing.

Eligible Borrows

Any Wisconsin nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, faith-based organization, cooperative or community development organization that provides services to low- to moderate-income populations.

Eligible Projects
• Affordable housing
• Nonprofit facilities
• Economic development initiatives
Loan Amoun ts $5,000 to $400,000, with consideration given to projects up to $1 million

Eligible Uses of Loan Proceeds
• New construction
• Acquisition and rehabilitation of existing facilities
• Leasehold improvements
• Working capital
• Predevelopment loans, including land acquisition, professional fees and development costs
• Equipment

Basic Loan Types
• Primary and subordinate mortgage loans (LTV up to 95%)
• Construction financing
• Gap financing and bridge loans
   Equipment loans and leasehold improvements
   Working capital

Terms
Terms from three to five years with longer amortization periods (up to 30 years)

Interest Rates
FCI’s mission is to provide below-market rates; please call us at (866) 687-1468 for current interest rate quotes

CollateralAlways required but [their] mission allows [them] to be inherently more flexible than conventional lenders

Fees
1% origination fee; $250 documentation preparation fee, along with other standard closing costs such as filing costs and/or title insurance and, depending on the complexity of the transaction, legal fees.

Executive Education at the Wisconsin School of Business is offering five single-course enrollments for Academic Staff professional development. The main objectives of the grant program are individual professional development, improved program quality, and improved institutional effectiveness.

Courses are offered in the following areas:

Fundamentals of Management Sales & Sales Management

Information Technology Six Sigma

Product Management

Individual courses – no longer than three days – may be selected from many of the 200 Executive Education programs offered. There is no cost to your department or division. State Historical Society of Iowa 2011/2012 Research Grants

The State Historical Society of Iowa (SHSI) announces a grant program for the 2011/2012 academic year. SHSI will award up to ten stipends of $1,000 each to support original research and interpretive writing related to the history of Iowa or Iowa and the Midwest. Preference will be given to applicants proposing to pursue previously neglected topics or new approaches to or interpretations of previously treated topics. SHSI invites applicants from a variety of backgrounds, including academic and public historians, graduate students, and independent researchers and writers. Applications will be judged on the basis of their potential for producing work appropriate for publication in The Annals of Iowa. Grant recipients will be expected to produce an annotated manuscript targeted for The Annals of Iowa, SHSI’s scholarly journal.

two-page-maximum “data management plan” (DMP) for the retention and sharing of digital
and physical data generated from the research process.

Community Health Center Incubator Program in Wisconsin Being Piloted

The University of Wisconsin- Madison Center for Nonprofits (UW-CNP) in partnership with the Wisconsin Primary Health Care Association (WPHCA) and the Wisconsin Department of Health Services has received a $50,000 grant from the UW Partnership Program to pilot a Community Health Center incubator program in Wisconsin. "Expanding Access to Care in Rural and Underserved Areas" will create new strategies and services to help establish additional Health Centers in underserved communities in the state starting April 1, 2011.

The Wisconsin Community Health Center Incubator Program will be much like a business incubator program providing communities with the financial, legal, technical, and operational resources to become competitive applicants for grants.

Resources will include an online needs assessment tool, an incubator application and selection process, support for health care and business planning, and $7,000 in grant assistance ($7,000 local match required) to two communities selected to pilot the incubator program. Communities may use the grant to support program coordination, grant writing consultation, business operations and legal counsel.

Undergraduate Scholarships for UW-Madison Students

HILLDALE UNDERGRADUATE/FACULTY RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS AND
HOLSTROM ENVIRONMENTAL SCHOLARSHIPS provide support for collaborative research between undergraduate students and faculty or research/instructional academic staff members. The awards provide a grant of $4,000 to the student and $1,000 to the faculty/staff supervisor to help offset research costs. Students must have at least junior standing at the time of application. The Holstrom Scholarships require an environmental focus. The application deadline for 2011-12 awards is February 14, 2011. The Provost's office is soliciting proposals from faculty, staff and students for the spring 2011 Ira and Ineva Reilly Baldwin Wisconsin Idea Endowment competition. This endowment helps foster the Wisconsin Idea, the philosophy that the knowledge, ideas and solutions generated at the University benefit the people of Wisconsin, our nation and the world.

Deadline for Pre-proposals: Due in Dean's/Director's Office: 12:00 noon, Wed., Feb. 2, 2011

Proposals are encouraged for new outreach and public engagement activities that partner with community and off-campus organizations to extend and apply our research, education and clinical knowledge to help solve problems or take advantage of opportunities. Projects may begin on or after July 1, 2011 and last up to three years. Proposals for initiatives up to $120,000 are encouraged. This year the endowment will grant approximately $700,000 through the competition.

The Reilly Baldwin Wisconsin Idea Endowment call for proposals involves two steps:
1) UW-Madison faculty, staff or students must first submit a pre-proposal; and
2) Individuals whose pre-proposals are accepted will be invited to submit a full proposal.

Pre- and full proposals must be signed off at the departmental and dean's/director's levels before submission to the Office of the Provost. Pre-proposals are due in your Dean's/Director's office by noon, Wed., Feb. 2, 2011. Signed copies of the pre-proposals are due in the Provost's office by noon, Wed., Feb. 9, 2011. In this session is designed for grad students in the Biological and Physical Sciences who are either new to the external funding process and have not yet applied for outside grants, or for those who would like a refresher.

We will provide an overview of the external funding application process, including: important considerations for preparing to seek and apply for "grants" and common - yet dangerous - pitfalls to avoid in the process. Additionally, we will outline the types of grants available to grad students, as well as important things to consider when preparing an application for a grant. This workshop will also include a brief demonstration of advanced search strategies in the Community of Science Funding Opportunities database, time allowing.

4) NSF Fellowship Fellows & Reviewers Panel
     April 20, 2010 - Biotech Auditorium - 2:00-3:00 p.m.

This panel workshop is for grad students in the Biological, Physical and Social Sciences who are interested in the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP). There will be a brief overview of the fellowship program. Then, NSF faculty reviewers and current NSF fellows will provide some insight based on their experience with the GRFP. They will discuss how NSF instructs its reviewers, and what the experience of reviewing applications is like, as well as how the application process works for prospective applicants and what they have gained from applying for and winning an NSF fellowship. This panel workshop is for dissertator or near-dissertator graduate students in the Arts & Humanities and Social Sciences, to provide some background on a few major external dissertation fellowships. There will be a brief overview of the programs to be discussed, such as the ACLS/Mellon Dissertation Completion Fellowship, Charlotte Newcombe Fellowship, and the Social Science Research Council's International Dissertation Research Fellowship. Then, faculty reviewers and current and previous fellows will provide some perspective on the fellowship programs. They will discuss what the experience of reviewing applications is like, as well as how the application process works, and what benefits they have gained from applying for and winning a dissertation fellowship. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health & Society Scholars Program at UW-Madison is sponsoring a campus-wide competition for Population Health Dissertation Grants for the academic year 2009-2010. Eligible students must be enrolled in any UW-Madison Ph.D. program and be working on a topic in the study of health and society. One of our primary goals is to expand population health research across campus. Our aim is to encourage dissertations that include components of population health broadly defined, such as addressing the multiple determinants of health (e.g., biological, medical, behavioral, social, economic and environmental) and their important interactions over the life course; examining the measurement, distribution, or experiences of health; or evaluating interventions (at individual, community, or policy levels) for their impact on population health outcomes. The grant to the student is to be used toward dissertation research, such as for a pilot study, data collection expenses, or other research activities related to the student’s work in health and society. The proposal should clearly state a plan of action, how this award will improve current or planned research, and an explanation of how the money will be used. Proposals will be evaluated based on the quality of the proposal, the relevance of the work to expanding knowledge on health and society, and the project’s contribution to expanding research on health and society or population health across campus. Funds must be spent by April 30, 2011, and a final report is due to the RWJF Health & Society Scholars Program by July 1, 2011. In addition, a brief oral presentation will be required at a campus-wide symposium in the late Spring of 2011.

Award: $5,000 to the student, plus $1,000 to a faculty advisor *
(We anticipate approximately 8 awards.)

Due: February 25, 2010 (Notification: March 5, 2010)

* The funds to the faculty advisor go into a research account. These funds need not be spent on the doctoral student project. They are provided as incentive to participate in the dissertation research of students doing work on health and society.

Application Process: The proposal should include an abstract section (250 words max), project description, budget and budget rationale, and references. Please email the proposal (5 pages max, double-spaced, Arial 11 pt font or equivalent), a CV, and a brief letter from your advisor to Jane Lambert at jflamber@wisc.edu.

The Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) at UW-Madison is a new collegiate chapter affiliated with the international AFP organizations and the UW Center for Nonprofits. Our chapter is comprised of both graduate and undergraduate students. Our mission is to work with local non-profit organizations to help them maximize their effectiveness and to expose current students to meaningful work.

This year, students will assist two local nonprofits with exciting fundraising events. We are helping the Literacy Network plan their 5th Annual Literacy 24/7 Fundraiser and the Liberian Assistance Program their public screening of the film, Pray the Back to Hell. These are great opportunities to become involved with local causes and develop your leadership skills.

3Good Questions, the Madison innovator of Question-Based Business Planning, is announcing a $25,000 grant for qualified Dane County non-profit organizations for a comprehensive question-based business plan. The application period is August 15 through October 15, 2009.

On Tuesday, August 11, 2009, the UW ICTR Community-Academic Partnerships Program* is offering a morning lecture and afternoon workshop on program evaluation--featuring Christine Maidl Pribbenow, Associate Scientist, Wisconsin Center for Education Research.

The lecture and workshop are intended for academics and their community partners who wish to evaluate community-based programs. The activities are designed for novice evaluators who have an understanding about evaluation, but are lacking the basic knowledge to conduct it.

TOPICS WILL INCLUDE
--Framing an evaluation question: What do I want to know?
--Designing an evaluation plan: How will I answer this question?
--Using appropriate methods: From whom and how will I collect data?
--Reporting results: How do I analyze data and what do my findings tell me?

CHRISTINE MAIDL PRIBBENOW Christine Maidl Pribbenow works at the Wisconsin Center for Education Research and serves as the Evaluation Director for a number of government- and foundation-supported grants. In particular, she works with the Women in Science and Engineering Leadership Institute (WISELI, NSF), the Wisconsin Program for Scientific Teaching (WPST, HHMI), and the Midwest Alliance for Students with Disabilities in STEM (NSF). In the past, she has conducted mixed-method evaluations based at single institutions, as well as at large, multi-site programs and states. Her doctorate is from the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis (UW-Madison), with an emphasis on the study of postsecondary education.
